Meet Keala

She is a strong woman of colorShe stands tall and commands your presence with her quiet confidenceNot flashyBut she shines bright like sunrises over the oceanShe feels–she nurtures–she lovesShe takes the broken pieces and does her magicThe beauty you see emanating from the mosaic is HER LIGHT!

Keala Rodgers is a mother, an educator, a birth doula, a reproductive justice activist, and a spoken word artist. She believes in the power of words and their ability to affect change. She also believes that education is a key component to freedom. She is a proud graduate of North Carolina A&T State University, and she has been an educator in Guilford County Schools for 16 years. She recently earned her masters degree in school administration from Gardner-Webb University, and she aspires to be an assistant principal in the short term. Her two children are her biggest accomplishment and biggest motivation. Keala strives to use her voice to share her stories, the stories of others, and build community from commonalities.

GROW Residency

“Overcoming by the (Spoken) Word” is a residency to create a community of overcomers, where women share stories of how they faced adversity and prevailed. This residency will focus on the power of testimony to support our mental health. It may seem like we’re alone when we face obstacles, but telling the story of how we got through them can greatly encourage others, thereby showing that we’re not as alone as we thought. Keala will invite women to share their stories of resilience through poetry and spoken word, accompanied by dance and visual art. Join Keala for various workshops and events during her residency starting on March 18 through April 28.
